Moving to Norway – Customs Requirements Made Simple

Norwegian customs laws are strict but clear. If you’ve been living outside Norway for more than 12 months, and your items have been owned and used for at least 6 months, you can bring your household goods duty- and tax-free.

To qualify for exemption, you’ll need to:

✅ Provide a copy of your passport (photo page only)
✅ Submit a completed and signed RD-0030E Norwegian Customs Declaration
✅ Present a detailed inventory list in English or Norwegian
✅ Provide an 11-digit Norwegian ID number
✅ Import the goods within 12 months of your move

This applies to personal effects such as furniture, clothing, electronics, and household items—as long as they’ve been for your private use and will remain so after the move.

👉 You must already be in Norway at the time of clearance, or your shipment may be delayed.

Where We Deliver in Norway

Whether you’re moving to a city, coast, or somewhere near the fjords, we cover all corners of Norway:

🏙 Oslo – Norway’s modern capital with thriving business and culture
Bergen – The gateway to the fjords and full of charm
Stavanger – Norway’s oil capital with a mix of urban life and nature
🎓 Trondheim – Home to one of Norway’s top universities
❄️ Tromsø, Kristiansand, Drammen, Ålesund, and beyond

We partner with trusted local agents to ensure your shipment is delivered promptly, safely, and right to your new front door.

What You Can and Can’t Ship

Permitted duty-free (with required documents):

  • Used furniture and personal effects

  • Kitchen appliances and décor

  • Books, clothing, bicycles, and sports gear

  • Artwork and non-commercial collections

🚫 Restricted or Prohibited Items:

  • Alcohol and tobacco – no duty-free allowance; extremely high duties apply and a separate import permit is required

  • Food products – generally not permitted in household goods shipments

  • Weapons and ammunition – require a police permit in advance

  • Prescription medications – may be prohibited; must be declared

  • Narcotics, meat, certain pets (reptiles, endangered species), explosives – strictly banned

📦 Tip: Avoid vague labels like “miscellaneous” or “personal items.” Norwegian customs are thorough and prefer detailed, accurate inventories.

Shipping Vehicles to Norway

Bringing your car? Be prepared—vehicles are not considered part of duty-free household goods.

You must pay import duties, VAT, and registration fees. However, you can apply for temporary permission to drive a foreign-registered vehicle for up to 14 days after your move.

You’ll need:

  • Bill of lading

  • Purchase invoice

  • Registration and conformity documents

  • Proof of moving to Norway (e.g. change of address or employment contract)

After clearance, you must register the vehicle on Norwegian number plates and pay the annual road tax.

Moving with Pets?

Norway loves animals, but they take pet health seriously. You’ll need:

  • Import licence

  • Approved microchip identification

  • Rabies vaccination and antibody test

  • Deworming certificate (dogs only)

  • EU pet passport (or equivalent)

Pets from non-EEC/EFTA countries may face a quarantine period of 4 to 6 months. We’ll help guide you through the red tape so your pets arrive safely and legally.
