Moving From the EU? Good News

If you’re relocating to Greece from another EU country, the process is relatively simple:

You’ll need:

  • A T2L document stamped at origin or a B/L marked as STATUS C

  • A packing list

  • A copy of your passport

  • An Authorization/Declaration Form, legalised by Greek authorities

These forms can be certified at a Greek police station, KEP center, or at your local Greek Embassy or Consulate.

Good news: you won’t pay customs duties for used household goods from within the EU. But your items must be clearly itemised, and electrical appliances should include brand, model, and serial number where possible.

For moves arriving via Heraklion, you’ll also need a rental or ownership contract, verified by your Greek tax office.

Coming From a Non-EU Country?

If you’re moving from the UK, USA, Canada, or elsewhere outside the EU, your items may be subject to duties and taxes—unless you qualify for duty-free status. There are two paths:

Option 1: Standard Import (Taxes Apply)

You’ll need:

  • A full packing list

  • Bill of Lading or Air Waybill

  • Passport copy

  • Greek VAT number (AFM) and tax office info

  • Completed EORI application and declaration

  • Online electronic authorization (we’ll guide you through it)

Option 2: Duty-Free Entry With a Certificate of Repatriation

If you’re returning to Greece or moving there permanently, you may qualify for tax-free import if:

  • You’ve lived outside Greece for at least 2 years

  • You apply for a Certificate of Repatriation from your local Greek Consulate at least 1 month before export

You’ll also need:

  • Old and current passports

  • Proof of residency abroad (e.g. tax returns or utility bills)

  • Local rental or property contract

  • Greek VAT number

  • EORI documents and authorization forms

This option is great for returning Greek nationals and those planning to live in Greece full-time.

What You Can—and Can’t—Bring

Allowed duty-free (with conditions):

  • Used household goods

  • Furniture, clothing, electronics

  • Books, artwork, and personal collections

🚫 Prohibited or Restricted Items:

  • Alcohol: More than 1L over 22% ABV or 2L under 22%, 4L wine, and 16L beer may incur duties

  • Firearms, drugs, explosives – strictly prohibited

  • Live plants, stuffed animals, animal skins, and ivory – not allowed

  • Tobacco products and antiquities over 100 years old – highly restricted

Be specific on your inventory list—vague labels like “miscellaneous” can trigger delays or inspections.

Cars and Motorbikes – Bring or Buy?

Yes, you can import your car or bike, but the rules are strict.

You’ll need:

  • Original vehicle title and registration card

  • Driving license, insurance, and conformity certificate

  • Valid Greek VAT number

  • A Certificate of Repatriation if importing duty-free

  • Your car must meet EU standards and have a 17-digit chassis number (for bikes)

Options:

  • Tourist import: You can drive for up to 6 months with foreign plates

  • Repatriation import: Duty-free if you’ve owned the vehicle for 6+ months and qualify

  • Diplomatic import: Requires embassy franchise

We’ll help assess if your vehicle is eligible and worth importing—sometimes local purchase is simpler!
